These magnificent birds can be found all the way from Belém through Pará and the Pantanal to northern Paraguay.   They like a wide range of habitats from savanna and open wooded areas with acuri and bocaiúva palms.  The acuri nut needs to be eaten by cattle first. The macaws then forage for the nuts that have been excreted, finding them much easier to crack open than the fresh nuts on the trees. It is said that as the palms grow harder nuts, the macaws grow bigger beaks! They nest in tree cavities, palms and cliffs. This bird is vulnerable due to loss of habitat to farming.
