These parrots live in a small area south of Belém, Pará, in Amazonian terra firma and várzea forest. Unusually for parrots they nest communally in tree cavities, where several females may contribute eggs. However, unlike cuckoos, they all help to rear the chicks. They eat almost anything, including açaí and bacaba palm nuts, cashews, fruits and flowers. Here they are feeding on the spectacular Symphonia flowers (Symphonia globulifera). Sadly, due to loss of habitat, guarouba numbers are declining.
