Observed near Brasília, these macaws are eating the fleshy algodãozinho flowers (Eriotheca macrophylla). They like open wooded habitats with trees that provide nesting cavities. Sometimes they make nests in arboreal termite mounds. They also inhabit the savanna and damp areas where buriti palms (Mauritia flexuosa) grow. Their population is wide-ranging, from Roraima to the state of São Paulo. The northern type has a black beak and the southern one a white beak.
